CCOE Course Descriptions

Course 1: Noninvasive Hemodynamic Function and Assessment

Understanding how the physiologic changes in pregnancy affect the noninvasive assessments of a pregnant woman is important when caring for pregnant women. This course is a foundation for the critical care courses and the information is applicable to all pregnant women whether well or critically ill.

This course includes the following topics:

• Physiologic changes during pregnancy that affect hemodynamic and oxygen transport assessment
• Determinants of cardiac output and oxygen transport concepts
• Noninvasive hemodynamic and oxygen transport assessment parameters

Course 2: Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)

DIC is the second-leading cause of severe maternal morbidity (SMM) among hospitalizations for childbirth. You need to know which obstetric conditions are associated with DIC and the signs and symptoms of DIC. This course includes the following topics:

• Normal coagulation during pregnancy
• Pathophysiology of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
• Clinical presentation
• Predisposing obstetric conditions
• Laboratory interpretation
• Management

Course 3: Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)

Pregnancy can complicate diabetes and increase the risk of DKA, which is a rare complication but a medical emergency. You need to know how the normal adaptations of pregnancy affect diabetes, events that may precipitate DKA, and how DKA is managed. This course includes the following topics:

• Incidence and types of diabetes
• Adaptations of pregnancy as predisposing factors
• Precipitating events
• Pathophysiology of DKA
• Clinical diagnosis
• Management of DKA
